]]> Salix pierotii is a native to China, Russia, Japan and Korea and is easy to recognize this tree in leaf, as it has a very distinctive growth pattern. It can reach heights of 20 to 50 feet with dark grayish yellow or grayish brown flaky bark. Flower buds are reddish brown, oval shaped and hairy (pubescent) when young. Flowers in April and May. It must have a sunny situation in not too moist soil, preferring a sandy-loamy, gritty-loamy or sandy clay soil; however, they thrive in wet, clay-based loam at the nursery. The nursery received cuttings through the generosity of the Arnold Arboretum and the Morton Arboretum (as S. jessoensis). It can be used as an ornamental tree, screen, or windbreak. It is too twiggy for basketry.

]]> Rubra is a natural hybrid found in many locations in the UK and throughout Europe where the two species grow near each other. It produces a tall shrub or small tree 10-20ft high. Many selections have been made and as the rods are long and flexible they have been used for 100’s of years for basketry. All rubras have green undersides to the leaves.  ‘Harrisons B’ has thicker stems and larger leaves than ‘Harrisons’. They are both very vigorous growers for us in VT and make lots of rods from very dense stools (the term for coppiced willows).

All Rubras have green undersides to the leaves and have pubescent (furry) young stems and leaves. It has never flowered for us, so we can’t tell you anything about them. I haven’t been able to find out why ‘Harrisons’ and ‘Harrisons B’ were selected. I’ll do more research and fill you in, if and when I find out! They are both very vigorous growers for us in VT and make lots of rods from very dense stools (the term for coppiced willows).

]]> At last we’ve found an Osier we can grow successfully! All other attempts resulted in stunted plants loaded with every insect pest that can attack willows. This is a vigorous selection or hybrid of the Osier that grows long straight stems and used for hundreds of years in Europe for all kinds of different uses. It has been asked for by customers ever since we went on line with our nursery! I wrote to Bowhayes Trees in the UK to find out how it originated, but never received a reply; they sell wholesale willow and poplar selections and hybrids. Here is what we know from our experience: It is a female Osier that is very similar to S. viminalis in appearance with 6-8in long green leaves with silver undersides, downy stems and and a green-brown trunk in the first years. This is insect resistant and the species S. viminalis is not for us; so I’m guessing it’s a hybrid, perhaps S. schwerinii is the other parent!

]]> Details are scant for ‘Golden Willow’. The stem begins as a dull red, but shifts to orange and then yellow as it ages (Checklist for Cultivars of Salix, Kuzovkina, 2015). As with our other x fragilis f vitellina selections, this one produces long, straight, colorful rods well-suited for weaving.

The post fragilis f. Vitellina ‘Flanders Red’ first appeared on Vermont Willow Nursery.

]]> A selection probably made in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking area of northern Belgium. ‘Flanders Red’ has new foliage flushed red and egg-yolk yellow stems that turn red late in the summer and stay that way all winter, so it’s red in a couple of colorful ways. This is a female selection with slender green catkins 2-3in long. Can grow into a large tree, but best if coppiced regularly to keep its colorful ways forever young.

]]> We discovered we had the name of this selection slightly wrong so we added “Bark” to the end of its name. Another great golden-yellow selection with vigorous orangey-yellow stems. As you can see in the photo it has almost unbranched stems, making it very useful for basketry and other objet d’art.
