]]> This is an old artificial cross thought to have originated in Germany around1831. It was first described by Andersson in 1867 as a specimen collected in a garden in Hessen, Germany, and later put into commerce by Späth of Berlin (Clarke, 1980). It is of the most widely grown weeping willows, especially in North America where it is also known as the “Thurlow Weeping Willow” and often mistakenly listed as babylonica.

The branches are thin, reach down to the ground, and tend to sway in the breeze. Our stock comes from the wonderful folks at the Holden Arboretum in Ohio. The catkins on ours are hermaphroditic, meaning they’re both male and female. Neat! Foliage begins light, and darkens during the year. The flashy undersides of the leaves put on quite the late summer show!

]]> A contorted hybrid tree with orange-yellow young stems that are passed on by genes from the Golden Willow (S. xfragilis f. vitellina). It grows 20-30ft if left unpruned and is one of the most upright selections. The foliage is bright green and is also contorted; it is less prone to die back than other twisted willows.

]]> This small weeper is best suited as an ornamental in small gardens. It’s one of the few willows we offer that travel along above the ground. Michael trained ours up to an eye-catching 5 ft. Given the proper care this willow is sure to please as ground cover or a centerpiece to a small backyard escape. Since it can be contained and trained easily, it would also do well as shade in an animal run. Not recommended for browsing herbivores. In an ironic twist, goats might be a bit too voracious for ‘Pendula Kilmarnock’.

]]> Michael received cuttings of these from the Chicago Botanical Garden in a willow exchange. As you can see in the pictures it has a low stature that crawls across the ground and cascades over edges. Neat! This is also one of the few willows we offer that appears to be tolerant of partial sun. It’s neighbors in the nursery are quite large but it manages to hold it’s own! We believe this variety would excel in border spaces along difficult-to-maintain landscape features such as drainage ditches and creeks.

]]> Chrysocoma is the most recognizable willow in Vermont. You can spot this imposing beauty all over the landscape, especially in the winter. Would you believe it was the last willow on our nursery to hold on to it’s leaves? Michael planted a series of these along the edge of the winter garden that catch the eye at any point in the year. I have one outside of my office and I assure you that it is a treat!

]]> UNAVAILABLE AS OF 2026

This glorious honey-colored curly willow was developed in the breeding program at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry by Rich Kopp in 1999. It is a cross between a Salix babylonica hybrid found in Lafayette, NY and Salix alba, (they gave the accession #99010 to this clone). It must have Salix babylonica f. tortuosa in its genetic make up to account for the twisty stems. It is said to grow fast with consistent tortuosity. From what I have seen of this plant it will make an excellent landscape plant; providing color and interest wherever it’s planted.

]]> Another vigorous species, the Black Willow will grow over a 100ft tall; it makes an imposing tree with deeply furrowed bark. It is the largest-growing native willow in the USA and grows wild in the Eastern half of the country. It one of the most common trees in Vermont on river banks and other damp areas; I’ve even found it growing in a foot of water in Lake Champlain. We have a tiny plant on my property beside a beaver pond–obviously there were more before supper! It has now been caged! It has bright green, twiggy young growth that is great if dried and used as plant supports for perennials (if you don’t dry them they’ll start to grow!). Black Willow is represented in the West by the botanically similar Salix gooddingii that I have recently obtained cuttings of (sadly these died to the ground in the winter of ’18/’19, but sprouted at the base.

]]> ‘Golden Curls’ is a female selection of this highly variable species. Unlike some other curly willows this has a definite weeping habit, but it weeps with very curly golden-red twigs not straight down like the Golden Weeping Willow. We’ve had this plant for several years and weren’t sure whether to list it or not, but finally we realized that this weeping habit was unique among curly willows. It would look simply fabulous planted on the back of a pond where it could dangle over the water and provide delightful reflections. You have to protect it from beavers with heavy-duty metal fencing around the trunk for at least 3ft as they would munch through the trunk in a few hours (believe me, I have seen this happen!).

]]> A hybrid said to be a cross between the Golden Weeping Willow, S. x pendulina f. salamonii ‘Chrysocoma’ and the Chinese curly-stemmed willow S. babylonica f. tortuosa found in Argentina. I believe that S. fragilis f. vitellina ‘Britzensis’ was involved with the breeding as the young stems are as red as that cultivar and it is more upright than other curly willows.

This is a male selection with bright yellow catkins that flower for us in late April. This is a show-piece plant with year-long interest from the shining copper-red twisted stems. Grows 15-25ft tall with upright trunks, and branches that twist in many directions. Grows well in average soil and full sun, and can be pruned to keep it smaller. Can also be coppiced to produce great cut stems for flower arrangements, especially if mixed with S. gracilistyla or ‘Mt Aso’.
