Miyabeana originates from Hokkaido, Japan, and was offered to the Ministry of Natural Resources in Ontario for biomass experiments (Checklist for Cultivars of Salix L.). It eventually found it’s way to the wonderful folks over at Cornell University, who have done extensive studies on it. The fact sheet for Sx61 is currently unavailable, but can be found here: https://willow.cals.cornell.edu/extension/#factsheets

Our miyabeana cultivars are extremely vigorous! In 2020, our friend Aresh Javadi and his understudy Minerva came and coppiced our entire patch of miyabeana. Between Spring and Fall, they all grew rods over six feet long. No, that is NOT a typo! Miyabeana is a proven winner and would work well as a privacy screen, wind/snowbreak, creating living and dried structures, early pollinator assistance…you get the idea. All of this vigor and it tops out at relatively small size. This willow keeps a nice, lively green-yellow throughout the year and taper to red at the tips.

Sx67 is almost entirely identical to Sx61 and 64, the differences being quite literally microscopic.

*anecdotally, we have sent miyabeana and it’s variations all over the country, and have not had reports of issues planting in hardiness zones above 6

The post purpurea ‘Multinervis’ first appeared on Vermont Willow Nursery.

]]> This is a very vigorous-growing male purpurea variety that we received under this name early in our history. After coppicing, it produces long straight rods 8-12 feet tall. In botanical literature, Salix multinervis is listed as a synonym for S. integra. Ours is definitely a purpurea variety so we really don’t know what selection this really is! Whatever it is, it’s a great variety and more robust than most purpureas.

]]> This is an old artificial cross thought to have originated in Germany around1831. It was first described by Andersson in 1867 as a specimen collected in a garden in Hessen, Germany, and later put into commerce by Späth of Berlin (Clarke, 1980). It is of the most widely grown weeping willows, especially in North America where it is also known as the “Thurlow Weeping Willow” and often mistakenly listed as babylonica.

The branches are thin, reach down to the ground, and tend to sway in the breeze. Our stock comes from the wonderful folks at the Holden Arboretum in Ohio. The catkins on ours are hermaphroditic, meaning they’re both male and female. Neat! Foliage begins light, and darkens during the year. The flashy undersides of the leaves put on quite the late summer show!

]]> Rubra is a natural hybrid found in many locations in the UK and throughout Europe where the two species grow near each other. It produces a tall shrub or small tree 10-20ft high. Many selections have been made and as the rods are long and flexible they have been used for 100’s of years for basketry. All rubras have green undersides to the leaves.  ‘Harrisons B’ has thicker stems and larger leaves than ‘Harrisons’. They are both very vigorous growers for us in VT and make lots of rods from very dense stools (the term for coppiced willows).

]]> ‘Patent Lumley’ is a striking female clone that was introduced by the US Forestry Service in the early 1900’s as a cultivar of S. pentandra. I cannot find out any more information about this choice selection. Ours flowered for the first time in 2014 after 6 years in the nursery. Wow, did they put on a show! It produces an abundance of bright green female catkins with the emerging leaves in May. The foliage is one of the most attractive of all willows. Unlike Salix pentandra the branches are brittle (check out the video on the next variety page!).

The post triandra ‘Whissender’ first appeared on Vermont Willow Nursery.

]]> This came to us as S. daphnoides ‘Purple Heart’ (a female selection) so as soon as it flowered with male catkins so we had a big oops! We checked it out and found it is a very cool selection of S. triandra and by far the most vigorous and prettiest of the triandras we have grown; also one of the most popular in Europe for basket-makers to boot. As you can see it’s a free-flowering male selection that bees swarm to! Another amazing feature of the Triandras is their exfoliating bark that rivals any other type of tree grown for this purpose (Cornus, Maples, Pines, Birch, Plane/Sycamore, Stewartia, Crepe Myrtle etc.)! Will grow on poor ground and light sandy soil. Coppice every 2-3 to get the best rods; but remember it only flowers on old wood, so don’t coppice every year.

]]> Shrub of northern beaches and riverbanks that grows from 2-18ft depending on location; the Satiny Willow is a distinctive shrub or small tree, found mainly in eastern Canada and bordering States. It takes its name from the lustrous, velvety leaves. The leaves are long, narrow and pointed, with straight, wavy, or slightly notched margins, that roll inwards. They are green above and densely silky-hairy beneath with a grayish, bluish, or whitish waxy coating on the underside. The hairs are whitish or sometimes rusty in colour–ours are pure white. In contrast, the upper surface of the leaves is glossy and hairless, or has only a sparse covering of fine hairs. The branches of the satiny willow are extremely brittle at the base and are reddish-brown or yellow-brown, with a grayish waxy or powdery coating. Flower buds appear in late summer and have reddish brown bud-scales and are pointed at the tip. Catkins appear in early Spring before the leaves and grow 1–1.5in long. The anthers (pollen sacs) appear on long white filaments (stalks) somewhat reminiscent of a pincushion! George Argus, the pre-eminent Salix taxonomist in North America, kindly shared cuttings of this truly beautiful plant with me. Can easily be confused with the non-native S. viminalis that has naturalized in some areas, but the leaves of S. pellita are shinier and whiter underneath; also the twigs of the Satiny Willow are much more brittle at the base.

]]> At last we’ve found an Osier we can grow successfully! All other attempts resulted in stunted plants loaded with every insect pest that can attack willows. This is a vigorous selection or hybrid of the Osier that grows long straight stems and used for hundreds of years in Europe for all kinds of different uses. It has been asked for by customers ever since we went on line with our nursery! I wrote to Bowhayes Trees in the UK to find out how it originated, but never received a reply; they sell wholesale willow and poplar selections and hybrids. Here is what we know from our experience: It is a female Osier that is very similar to S. viminalis in appearance with 6-8in long green leaves with silver undersides, downy stems and and a green-brown trunk in the first years. This is insect resistant and the species S. viminalis is not for us; so I’m guessing it’s a hybrid, perhaps S. schwerinii is the other parent!
