Vermont Willow Nursery is home to two gorgeous beaver ponds! A perfect environment for natural willow propagation (see: A Willow’s Place). Either through hanky panky from the nearby nursery, beavers, or some other means, this species has grown up in a few different places around said ponds. This has yet to be unidentified but bears a striking resemblance to petiolaris and eriocephala – the cross of which already exists in ‘Americana’. Enough differences remain that lead us to believe this the successful progeny of one of the three. Very likely a cross between natives, but definitely naturalized in our cold environ. When we know more we’ll update this page. How exciting!
Found at home quite literally in the water, this willow is without a doubt a strong candidate for streambank restoration projects…or solidifying that pool of water in your yard! Like ‘Americana’, the roughly six foot rods are generally upright-growing with little branching. The first-year rod growth and catkin sheathes are a glossy burgundy.
